Instituto de Investigación en Metalurgia y Materiales. Maestría en Metalurgia y Ciencias de los Materiales ; In this study silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized via green chemistry using aqueous extracts of Valeriana officinalis and Passiflora incarnata as reducing agents and silver nitrate (AgNO3) as a precursor salt. The bioreduction reaction of Ag+ ions to Ag0 was evaluated to different plant extract and silver salt concentrations. Afterwards, the structural characterization of the nanoparticles was performed by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) techniques. All of these techniques confirm the formation of silver nanoparticles, which indicates that the plant contains substances suitable and capable of performing the reduction of silver ion to elemental silver. It was observed that as the concentration of silver nitrate increases the formation of the AgNPs is increased. Also, the AgNps in the solution increases with the concentration of the plant extract was increased. The average size of the Ag nanoparticles obtained was around 22 nm. The size distribution had a bimodal tendency with nanoparticles in the range of 10-20 nm and 45-60 nm. For Passiflora incarnata, it is observed same that increasing the concentration of the extract, increased the formation of NPs was detected furthermore NPs rate reduction is better than using Valeriana officinalis plant. The bactericidal effect of the Ag NPs against E. coli bacteria by disc diffusion method was evaluated; it was observed that with increasing concentration of NPs, more halo bacterial growth inhibition was obtained indicating its bactericidal efficacy.
