peer reviewed ; The state of retinal adaptation can alter the posilion of the isopleres considerably if these are measured in reduced illumination (less than 30 Lux); if the campimeler gels normal light, this is unimportant. During reduced illumination one finds a progressive increase in the field of vision, this is an excellent test for the adaptation of the rods. The contraction of the field in lessened illumination constitutes a reliable and sensitive quantitative test for nightblindness. Certain deficiencies, chiefly proteins and lipoids, cause a concentric contraction of the field when illumination is reduced. At the present the measurement of the field of vision in reduced light is the favoured method of discovery for scotomata of slight intensity; it is, however, important to know that the stale of retinal adaptation tends to alter the posilion of the isopteres, and that nightblindness can cause a definite contraction of the field of vision. © 1945 S.
