نبذة مختصرة : Objective: To analyze the statements and activities of some confronted intellectuals from Santander as a result of the regional sociopolitical crisis caused by the violent conflicts in García Rovira province, after the change from a conservative to a liberal national government. Methodology: Based on the method of studying illocutionary acts proposed by the historian Quentin Skinner, this text mainly examines the motives and intentions of Gustavo Otero Muñoz (1894-1957) expressed through his pronouncements in the press, public events, and correspondence, inherently linked to a belligerent communicative context. Thus, to reveal what Otero did when saying what he said, and to reveal and interconnect the controversies and interpretations of other related actors in that disputed regional-national communicative field. Originality: Through the analysis of the interrelationships between press and correspondence reveal that the political, the intellectual, and the cultural aspects are not realities experienced and studied separately, but rather, on the contrary, there are human experiences interwoven by networks of meanings, practices and representations that seek sociopolitical participation and action through various uses of language. Conclusions: This text shows that simultaneously with their official duties (government secretaries or Assembly members), some intellectuals from Santander resorted to cultural, discursive, and symbolic strategies to assume a position regarding the atrocious daily life of a provincial war and against the comments of the national press.
