Aquatic fauna inventory and habitat descriptors at Canglon and Filo del Tallo, Panama ; Inventario de fauna acuática y descriptores del hábitat de Canglón y Filo del Tallo, Panamá

An inventory of freshwater fish and macroinvertebrates of the Canglon Forest Reserve and Filo del Tallo Hydrological Reserve was made in a total of 12 stations during the period from July to August 2004. The collections were made with the help of seine seines, hand nets, and cast nets, with a total of 723 individuals belonging to 53 aquatic fauna species. For each station, the conservation status of the site and the main activities carried out as main habitat descriptors were recorded. Primary fish constituted 69 % of the total fish collected (22 species in nine families). Nine species of secondary fish were found, mainly mojarras and parivivos, as well as eight species of peripheral fish. The most abundant and representative species collected from the study area were the sardines (Astyanax panamensis and Roeboides occidentalis), the eartheater (Andinoacara coeruleopunctatus), the livebearer (Neoheterandria tridentiger), the machaca (Brycon argenteus), the eartheater (Geophagus crassilabris) and the Mana sardine (Cyphocharax magdalenae) constituting 84 % of the total fish catch. The study area contains 14 species of freshwater fish considered special elements. Las colectas se realizaron con la ayuda de chinchorros, redes de mano y atarrayas, con un total de 723 individuos pertenecientes a 53 especies de fauna acuática. Para cada estación se anotaron el estado de conservación del sitio y principales actividades desarrolladas como principales descriptores del hábitat.
