Les femmes dans le projet libéral de modernisation de l’Équateur (1895-1925)

Le projet de modernisation nationale que le libéral radical Eloy Alfaro prétend réaliser à son arrivée au pouvoir, en 1895, accorde aux femmes un rôle inédit en Équateur. Elles ne doivent plus seulement être épouses et mères, mais devenir actrices du changement idéologique et économique depuis l´espace public. Les considérant comme moteur du progrès, les libéraux leur accordent des droits inédits : accès au marché du travail, accès à l´éducation, droits juridiques. Toutefois, la portée des réformes est limitée et le regard sur les femmes et leur rôle évolue très lentement. Néanmoins, le libéralisme lance une dynamique dans l´émancipation des Équatoriennes dont témoigne l´émergence d´un sujet féminin défendant ses droits à participer aux affaires publiques. ; Having conquered the state presidency in 1895, the far left liberal Eloy Alfaro launched a program of national modernization. In the framework of this program, Ecuadorian women were given an unprecedented role in the future society : the women of the renewed nation were not only wives and mothers but also agents of economic and ideological change. The liberals were keen to grant women access to the labor market, education and civil rights. The impact of these reforms on women’s situation was limited, however, and their social position changed only gradually over time. Nonetheless, the liberal policy towards women facilitated emancipation in Ecuador through the emergence of a new feminine subject, claiming and defending her right to participate in public life.
