Due to its migratory nature, the construction industry still suffers annually from high rates of occupational injuries and fatalities when compared to other industries. Traditional safety management relies on human experience and manual processes. Consequently, several recent studies have investigated building information modeling (BIM) to optimise safety management. The main goal of this study was to explore the potential of BIM in safety management within the construction sector. For this purpose, a systematic review was conducted, categorising the articles found into five categories: Automatic rule checking, proactive feedback, training and education, knowledge-based systems, and planning and visualisation. The results reveal growth in practical BIM applications despite the limitations still found and technological advancements compared to previous scenarios. BIM serves as a central platform and has the potential to expand when combined with enabling technologies. An initial stage of practical applications can be observed in some studies, with limitations on mitigated risks, monitored parameters and involved employees. In addition, it is noteworthy that the main risk mitigated, eliminated, or monitored is the risk of falling from a height. Although BIM improves traditional safety management, its use must be further studied and applied on a larger scale. One of the recommendations for future studies is optimising the BIM model update process using enabling technologies. ...
