This PhD thesis includes 3 lines of research. A first study was the optimization of the protocol of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) in the Modicana breed, a minor italian cattle breed, autochthonous of Sicily. Our data suggested that a low dose of FSH is effective for MOET schedules in Modicana breed. Despite individual differences, Modicana breed is candidate to be a good embryo producer among dairy cattle breeds. A second line of research included the study of a long-standing granulosa cell tumour in a 6-year-old Holstein Friesian cow with irregular heats. The clinical findings underlined the effects on the genital tract caused by a prolonged exposition to E2, AMH and INH. Ultrasound, E2, INH and AMH evaluations were confirmed to be helpful for the diagnosis of GTCT. A third study was on an intense experience of resynchronization in Sicilian domestic buffalos. The reproductive efficiency of this species is often poor because of late sexual maturity, seasonal ovarian activity, prolonged postpartum anoestrus and consequent prolonged calving intervals. This study confirmed that Resynch may be applied in the buffalo breeding in Sicily. It may be useful to answer to the market demand of milk and “mozzarella” in the summer period, contrasting the spontaneous seasonality (short day breeders).
