نبذة مختصرة : Objective: to verify the association of prenatal, delivery and puerperium characteristics with the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in puerperal women treated at the Unified Health System of Santa Catarina. Method: prospective cohort study with 969 puerperal women from the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Sociodemographic and prenatal, delivery and puerperium information were collected in two moments: at the hospital, immediately after delivery, and by telephone, six months postpartum. Crude and adjusted logistic regression analyses were performed to verify the association of prenatal, delivery and puerperium variables with EBF, controlled for maternal characteristics. Results: variables that decreased the chance of maintaining EBF until 6 months of age were: pacifier use (64%), bottle use (75%) and receiving information about the importance of EBF in consultations (30%). On the other hand, babies who breastfed in the first hour of life (44%) and who were born vaginally (48%) were more likely to breastfeed up to 6 months of life. Conclusion: factors since prenatal care influenced EBF; however, there is an important association of factors involved in postpartum.
