نبذة مختصرة : This dissertation aims to underscore the pivotal role of design and engineering in enhancing the food system by empowering consumers to make more informed choices through an innovative smart labelling solution. The research enabled a better understanding of the context of the areas ad dressed, demonstrating the need for new strategies in the food industry in response to the growing unsustainability of these systems. These issues, particularly evident in domestic environments, are partly due to the misinterpretation of food labels, leading to the premature disposal of products that are still safe for consumption. The introduction of smart food labels emerges as a promising solution to overcome the limitations of conventional labels. By providing real-time monitoring of the condition of food products, these labels significantly con tribute to food safety and waste reduction. The developed project proposes an adaptable, smart labelling solution for reusable packaging, enabling the monitoring of perishable foods without the need for new packaging with integrated technology, thereby promoting the reduction of consumerism and waste. The preliminary results indicate that implementing smart labels could positively impact consumer behavior and the food industry. The methodology adopted combines the Triple Diamond approach, developed by the British Design Council, with principles from The Circular Design Guide by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, promoting a continuous innovation and resource efficiency cycle. Investing in research and development of smart food labels is crucial for creating a more sustainable food system, fostering food safety and the responsible use of resources.
