نبذة مختصرة : The use of synthetic oxytocin in pigs is a common practice to aid myometrial contraction, inducing and/or accelerating labor, given the long duration of the expulsion phase in this species. However, in the case of some types of dystocia, the use of oxytocin can lead to uterine rupture and maternal death. The aim of this study was to report a case of uterine rupture in a sow treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Paraíba, in Areia-PB. The owner reported two applications of 15 mL of Placentin® (Oxytocin). Internal examination by vaginal palpation revealed a completely open cervix and narrowing of the bony fetal tract, with no fetus in the birth canal. During inspection and palpation of the uterus, an extensive rupture of the uterine wall was found, which had a friable appearance. The findings during the surgical procedure, combined with the unfavorable general clinical condition, corroborated the decision to euthanize the animal. It can be considered that the paramount importance of obstetric care carried out by a veterinarian, to the detriment of interventions carried out by unqualified people, is a crucial element in reducing the risk of maternal and fetal death and that the lack of veterinary care on many farms leads to a large number of losses due to incorrectly performed procedures. This scenario reinforces the need for specialized care to better meet the needs of the animals.
