Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Psicologia apresentada à Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação ; In the current digital era, excessive screen and social media use, as well as the presence of poor sleep in university students has been increasing considerably. For this reason, there have been ongoing concerns regarding technology’s negative impact on sleep duration and quality. The main aims of this cross-sectional study were the analysis of the relationship between electronic devices and social media’s nocturnal usage, FoMO, several sleep variables (e.g. quality, duration, sleep onset) and psychological symptoms (e.g. anxiety, depression and stress), while controlling for the effect of other relevant variables that may also contribute to explain poor sleep in university students, and the validation and psychometric analysis of the Portuguese version of the Fear of Missing Out scale (FoMOs) – EMFF. The data were obtained, through several self-report questionnaires (e.g BaSIQS, PS-6, EHSA, DSPS-4, PSAS, EADS-21, PSWQ, RR-S, NMPQ-PT, Screen and social media questionnaires, EMFF), from a sample of 525 university students, whose age ranged from 18 to 64 years old (M=22.39, SD=5.62).Statistical analysis including Student’s t test, Pearson’s correlation and multiple linear regression were performed. According to exploratory factor analysis, a 2-factor structure was found for the FoMOs’ Portuguese version and not just a one factor solutionThe nocturnal use of electronic devices, social media and FoMO were related significantly with different sleep dimensions and were independent predictors of some of these variables as well. Nocturnal use of screens, social media and FoMO were also related significantly with anxiety, depression and/or stress. The presence of relationships between these variables has several important implications in terms of the student’s physical and mental health. In this sense, the present research emphasizes that excessive use of electronic devices and social media, at night, plays ...
