Este artigo tem por objetivo apresentar, analisar e caracterizar os diferentes significados que podem ser atribuídos à equação no ensino e na aprendizagem de Matemática. Fundamentado na tese de doutoramento de um dos autores, este trabalho discute alguns resultados de pesquisas na área da Educação Algébrica, no que se refere à significação da noção de equação. Em seguida, analisa como livros didáticos apresentam a idéia de equação, passando a indicar as recomendações feitas nos PCN, no que se refere à importância do trabalho com atividades que envolvam diferentes perspectivas e formas de conceber a Álgebra. Logo após, apresenta os multisignificados de equação, discutindo e analisando as suas potencialidades para a construção do conhecimento matemático na formação de professores. Based on one of the authors doctorate thesis, this work brings to discussion some research results in Algebraic Education field, about the process of giving meaning to the notion of equation. Following this discussion, the authors analyze how textbooks present equation idea, and indicate PCN´s recommendation about the importance of working with activities based on different perspectives and shapes to conceive Algebra. At last, the authors present the multimeanings of equation, discussing and analyzing their potentialities in the construction of mathematical knowledge during Teacher Training Courses.
