نبذة مختصرة : Trabalho de conclusão de curso (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Centro de Educação, Curso de Educação Especial Diurno, RS, 2017. ; This concluding article presents the life story of J., a deaf boy who knew the Sign Language only at the age of eight, and who, until then, had no diagnosis regarding deafness. In this context, the main objective of this research is the construction of the deaf identity through the Brazilian Language of Signals (LIBRAS), bringing to the surface the problematic around the development of the learning of J., in a regular educational environment, however, valuing the lived subsequence by him in terms of overcoming, which, in turn, managed to rise in his cognitive, psychological and social development. The methodological procedure chosen for this work was the Case Study, which provides the fundamental needs for understanding the life story of the protagonist of this work, and how they gave their experiences and why they are so important for their progress. The approach chosen was qualitative descriptive, considering that it examines facts, seeking to identify and interpret them, analyzing and describing the data collected in a grounded manner. Finally, as a research instrument, a semi-structured interview was conducted with two people who traveled along this path with J .: his adoptive mother and his teacher at the State School of Special Education Dr. Reinaldo Fernando Cóser.
