      Mathematical Modeling has been used at different levels of education and has proved itself an efficient tool in developing and improving skills. In this work, we focused on Mathematical Modeling from the perspective of Critical Mathematics Education, and we analyzed, through a literature review of theses and dissertations, the research that adopted Mathematical Modeling through the perspective of Critical Mathematics Education in the period covering more than 20 years. In addition to an initial analyzes of the data, we analyzed the objectives, the critical/modeling perspectives and the conclusions, in order to answer the question that motivated this literature review – what does Mathematical Modeling research from the perspective of Critical Mathematics Education indicate regarding the usage of Mathematical Modeling as a teaching methodology in the context of Higher Education, and what are the critical aspects related to it? The results show that there is more research in the south-southeast and few quantitative or mixed research. Furthermore, as the objectives of most of the analyzed works were not the critical aspects, few of them adopted a critical theoretical foundation and a methodology that contribute to these aspects. Finally, we noticed that empirical studies about Mathematical Modeling are lacking, signaling that this area needs more research and is a good field for future work. ; A Modelagem Matemática tem sido utilizada em diferentes níveis de ensino e tem se mostrado uma ferramenta para o desenvolvimento e aprimoramento de habilidades.
