M.Phil. ; This thesis is about the relationship among non-cognitive skills, educational attainment, and income. Specifically, I study the effect of teenagers’ non-cognitive skills on educational attainment and income, the effect of adults’ non-cognitive skills on income, the potential mediating effect of educational attainment on the association between teenagers’ non-cognitive skills and income, and the potential confounding effect of educational attainment on the association between adults’ non-cognitive skills and income. ; In this study, I conduct a comparative analysis of Mainland China and Taiwan based on the CGSS 2008 data and the TSCS 2009 data, by using structural equation models. For both Mainland China and Taiwan, a structural equation model is developed, in which non-cognitive skills of teenagers and adults are respectively reflected by a latent variable that is measured by eight indicators. The structural equation models with latent variables can help us account for and eliminate measurement error by incorporating multiple indicators. ; The results of the models show that in both Mainland China and Taiwan, teenagers’ non-cognitive skills have a positive effect on educational attainment. And in both Mainland China and Taiwan, educational attainment is a mediator through which teenagers’ non-cognitive skills affect income. However, significant differences between Mainland China and Taiwan exist. In Mainland China, teenagers’ non-cognitive skills can positively affect income through educational attainment, but adults’ non-cognitive skills have no effect on income. It is educational attainment that really matters for income. In contrast, in Taiwan, besides the positive effect of teenagers’ non-cognitive skills on income through educational attainment, adults’ non-cognitive skills have an independent positive effect on income. This finding reveals that in terms of economic success, non-cognitive skills play a more important role in Taiwan than in Mainland China. ; Furthermore, in Mainland China and ...
