Ph.D. ; Introduction ; Transgender women (TGW), facing severe stigma and multiple stressors, have high prevalence of mental health problems, such as depression and suicide. A large proportion of TGW engaged in sex work due to financial and nonfinancial benefits. Transgender women sex worker (TGSW) might be at increased risk of mental health problems with layered stigma associated with sex work but remain under-researched, particularly in China. Because of similarities in male biological sex and homosexual practice as well as shared experiences of discrimination and prejudice, TGSW are often misclassified as men who have sex with men (MSM) in public health surveillance, intervention and policy. The conflation of TGW/TGSW and MSM would delay the recognition of disease burden among TGW and ignore the specific health needs for each group. There is evidence showing that TGW might differ from MSM in the pattern of mental health problems and associated risks. To figure out the underlying mechanisms that induce between-group differences in mental health could provide significant implications for more tailored and effective health intervention to address mental health concerns of TGSW and MSM. According to minority stress model and stress coping theories, minority stress and coping play substantial roles in explaining mental health outcomes for sexual and gender minorities. Empirical evidence also suggested that minority stress and coping resources/strategies (e.g., social support and coping styles) mediated the differences in prevalence of mental health problems between heterosexuals and sexual minorities. Thus the present study explored the potential differences in levels of mental health problems and associated factors between TGSW and MSM groups from the perspective of minority stress and coping. ; Objectives ; This study aimed (1) to compare the levels of mental health problems (i.e., depression and suicidal ideation) between matched TGSW and cisgender MSM (C-MSM) recruited in the same city of China; (2) to examine ...
