      This study aims to examine a phenomenon long considered characteristic of late Roman Empire and responsible for its demise. This thesis questions the relevance of applying a contemporary phenomenon to an ancient one that was as much accepted as tolerated. Furthermore, this work prompts reflection on the very definition of corruption and what should be associated with it.In its first axis, this topic raises questions about the emergence of an increasingly bureaucratic society where law supplants custom. Corruption, now more prevalent, becomes more visible to contemporaries as the proliferation of officials and intermediaries in service of power creates greater opportunities for corruption, which is less acceptable to the inhabitants of the empire amidst heightened mistrust toward the state.Amidst an empire in turmoil, this subject seeks to understand the realities of a multifaceted phenomenon by focusing on individuals who exemplify the profound changes within the Empire and shifts in the functioning of power. Roman generals, belonging to a distinct caste within the Roman aristocracy, increasingly influenced by barbarian elements, nonetheless adhere to the tradition of Roman power practices, as the second axis aims to demonstrate.By portraying corruption as a complex protean phenomenon through its application in court intrigues and diplomatic circles, the third axis examines corruption as a weapon wielded by individuals seeking to seize and maintain power. ; Cette étude s’attache à étudier un phénomène longtemps considéré comme caractéristique de l’empire romain tardif et responsable de sa disparition. Ce mémoire interroge la pertinence de l’application d’un phénomène contemporain à un phénomène ancien qui était autant accepté que toléré. Plus encore, ce travail permet de se questionner sur la définition même de la corruption et de ce qui doit s’y rattacher.
