      The reading of the so-called classical sociology (Émile Durkheim, Max Weber and Karl Marx) may reveal the role of teaching in a capitalist society, especially in terms of theoretical and practical reflections on the relationship between education and work. This study invites the review of these theorists, especially the Weberian current of thought: educational vision of Max Weber and Karl Mannheim. The objective is the debate and investigation on education and work, as well as the possibility of social mobility for peripheral social classes and the construction of their professional identity. These reflections were the starting point for the elaboration of a research project at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ – Duque de Caxias Campus), which led to fieldwork with students of Chemistry at this vocational school.
