; The purpose of this thesis was to explore what child welfare workers think about meeting children and families in difficult situations, within the bounds of how social work is constructed. Further, the purpose was to analyze how learning about those difficulties can affect the child welfare worker in their professional capacity. The purpose was also to explore what comes across as helpful in order to handle learning about those difficulties. This study was carried out using a qualitative research method in the form of semi-structured interviews with child welfare workers which were analyzed using Bronfenbrenners ecological systems theory. The results showed an elevated work load, an emotional strain as well as how the system of social service is not designed with these struggles in mind. Different strategies to cope with hardships in regards to how social work is formulated were discovered. These were created by both individual child welfare workers as well as by the offices in which they work.
