The present doctoral work aimed at expanding current knowledge on manual and autogenic massages, and evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of autonomous and interactive robotic massage solutions. First, we conducted experimental research to better understand the characteristics of autogenic massages. We found a negative influence of embedded autogenic massage practice on strength performances. We also found that adding sliding pressures to conventional autogenic massage routines did not yield additional improvements. Then, we compared from psychometric, behavioral and neurphysiological indexes the effects of manual and autogenic massages on states of relaxation and well-being. Both massage interventions elicited greater relaxation than the control condition. However, manual massage elicited a more pronounced relaxation state than autogenic massage, as revealed by both objective and subjective indexes. With regards to motor control frameworks, manual massage mainly engages the person in a retroactive mode of action control. Conversely, autogenic massage involves voluntary actions and therefore engages the person in a proactive mode of action control. Robotic massages allow for real-time interactions with the massage gestures through remote control of the robot. Robotic massages thus allow participants to switch between proactive and retroactive modes of action control. Robotic massages therefore represent a sensorimotor experience which is distinct from that produced during manual and autogenic massages. We finally compared the effectiveness of robotic and manual massages performed by an experienced professional. Both interventions improved well-being and relaxation, but the effects were more pronounced after the manual massage intervention. Nonetheless, the effect of both interventions on perceived sensations was comparable. Robotic massage devices should not be considered as replacement tool for practitioners. They represent a support solution for repetitive and simple tasks. Massage robotic could, for example, ...
