As contemporary architects and urbanists embrasse various practices, how does the rise of digital technologies affects their domain of scrutiny ? Based on an ethnographic inquiry, this research questions the role of technics and technologies within the conception process of the city to come. The fieldwork is an office of architecture and urbanism, an independent research laboratory, a technological start-up and a non-profit organisation frame the actions of a small team of designers. Following their paths, the grounded analysis reveals a linear innovation process scheme. Starting with theoretical works, a collaborative R&D is undertaken. As the team needs it to become operational, some visualizations, tests and prototype are realized. Based on « open innovation », the team produce an innovative digital application to be used in the city making process. The research shows how the designers make sense of their actions, how they recurrently question their practice and legitimacy. Starting with the idea of an universal index score of the urban quality of life, they later promote a so called « collaborative urbanism » supposedly achievable through the digital tool they designed. To do so, they poach on various fields of knowledge, use « intellectual technologies » and manipulate non-human beings such as numbers, datas, algorithmic principles, informations, models and pictures. In this process, they go from prediction to innovation, from the aim of being scientific and objective to a political posture and the use of metaphors, from a virtual view of the city to a re-localized point of view, from datas to be projected on a city model to a city made of datas awaiting to be revealed. Observed in context, the technology and its way of dealing with time and space, encounters the actors of city making processes thus unveiling the fragile assemblage between a simulated and stimulated future to a shared and concrete one. ; Face à la diversité des pratiques des architectes-urbanistes, comment l’émergence du fait numérique ...
