Leonardo’s codes and manuscripts give, written or drawn, many quotes of ‘his’ Western Alps, well-known mountains sketched, as well as lakes, rivers and towns, creating interesting territorial analysis. The cartographers check his works with scientific look considering, in the nineteenth century, the "times of Leonardo da Vinci" as a moment of caesura between ancient and medieval maps and the great cartographic reform of the sixteenth century. The innovation of Vinciano’s cartographic thoughts, the relationship with his theory on the history of the Earth, the comparison with his measuring instruments and with his hypothesis on the calculation of the altitudes show, with ideal overlapped, the crystal clear previews of Grande di Vinci.
