This is of fundamental relevance in the teaching and learning process, in addition to being available to all students. However, the textbook should be used as one of the resources to be explored in the teaching community, not the only one. In this context, this research aims to analyze the role and effectiveness of the use of textbooks as a tool for learning Geography in the public education system. According to these facts, it is noted that the teacher has mediating power to select the best way to take advantage of this resource, because during the lived experiences it was possible to develop classes that used this instrument linked with other methodologies and resources that adhered to the teaching process -learning. In this way, it is the teacher's task to identify and select the best methodology for the use of this resource by contextualizing the theory with the empirical reality of the student, thus facilitating a better learning. O professor, na pr?tica educacional, busca na diversidade de recursos dispon?veis suporte no livro did?tico. Esse de fundamental relev?ncia no processo de ensino e aprendizagem, al?m de ser dispon?vel a todo alunado. Por?m o livro did?tico deve ser utilizado como um dos recursos a serem explorados no conv?vio docente e n?o o ?nico. Diante deste contexto, esta pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar o papel e a efetividade da utiliza??o do livro did?tico como instrumento para aprendizagem de Geografia no sistema de ensino p?blico. De acordo com esses fatos, nota-se que o professor possui poder mediador de selecionar a melhor forma de aproveitamento desse recurso, pois, durante as experi?ncias vivenciadas, foi poss?vel desenvolver aulas que usaram esse instrumento atrelado com outras metodologias e recursos que colaram com o processo ensino-aprendizagem. Desta forma, ? tarefa do professor identificar e selecionar a melhor metodologia para o aproveitamento desse recurso, contextualizando a teoria com a realidade emp?rica do aluno, facilitando assim uma melhor aprendizagem.
