In an attempt to investigate interaction between tumor cells and host's immune system, the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens and subpopulation of tumor infiltrating mononuclear cells (TIM) on 30 cases of renal cell cancer (RCC) and 46 cases of transitional cell cancer (TCC) at renal pelvis, ureter and urinary bladder were examined. Results of this study showed remarkable reduction of class I antigens in high grade and more invasive TCC and granular cell type of RCC which was worse prognosis than clear cell type. TIL in RCC was mainly composed of T cells and a smaller number of macrophages. CD8 positive cell was dominant population in T cells. The number of TIL significantly related to the degree of the expression of class I antigens on tumor cells. On the other hand, the expression of the expression of class I antigens on tumor cells. The expression of class II antigens on RCC and TCC did not related to any clinical factors. Class I antigens on RCC and TCC cells might influence immune responses of host against tumors.
