نبذة مختصرة : The author has considered the trending decline in the number of SMEs in the Japanese economy over the past 30 years. The reason is because the existence of SMEs defines various socioeconomic problems in Japan based on the “gap” - problem. When trying to analyze this subject further, the“ SMEs Reorganization” - theory and the“ Degrowth Communism” - theory, which have recently emerged, present issues that cannot be overlooked. The former insists on the exclusion and selection of SMEs in order to make them large enterprises, and the latter deals with serious problems (climate problems) but it assumes that large enterprises and SMEs are not yet separated. This paper considers the issues propounded from these theories and go back to the basics of SME research-“ Small business economics” - and-“ History of Japanese SMEs” -. Lastly the author attempt to determine an analytical angle on the today’s changes in the existence of SMEs.
