Tumucumaque is a name that refers to two geographical areas in the north of Brazil, the Parque Nacional Montanhas do Tumucumaque and the Parque Indigena do Tumucumaque. The Parque Indigena do Tumucumaque, according to the Indigenous Research and Training Institute (IEPE), “... consists of the Parque do Tumucumaque and Paru D'Este Indigenous Lands, mostly located in the State of Para, and a small area in the State of Amapa”. Together, the Parque do Tumucumaque and Paru D'Este Indigenous Lands, according to IEPE, form the Tumucumaque Complex, which is a land where indigenous populations Apalai, Kaxuyana, Tiriyo, Wayana and Xikiyana speaking the Kariban languages live. In this context of speakers of Kariban languages, the Xikiyana language has a small group of speakers; add to it the Akurio language remembered by a small group that currently lives among Tiriyo populations. These different populations and languages generate multilingual contexts able to generate possibilities for linguistic studies. Thus, the objective of this paper is to present an overview of the linguistic studies carried out on the languages of Tumucumaque; with this, the paper aims to draw attention to its multilingual nature, as well as systematize (linguistic) information available about the same Kariban languages. With these objectives, we are interested in projecting different directions related to the possibilities of linguistic studies in this Kariban area.
