نبذة مختصرة : Cet article se penche sur la conception humaniste et renaissante de l’adage horatien, Ut Pictura Poesis, et tente de mettre au jour les modalités selon lesquelles la poésie lyrique peut se constituer en objet du regard. La production poétique de Philip Sidney (1554-1586) et de son lointain cousin, George Herbert (1593-1633), témoigne d’une crise des potentialités mimétiques et ekphrastiques de la poésie. Écrite à une époque qui succède à une Réforme marquée par l’iconoclasme en Angleterre et à un moment où commence à se déliter la foi humaniste dans les pouvoirs d’imitation de l’artiste, leur poésie substitue une nouvelle forme de visualité et de matérialité à un art défaillant de la mimésis. Elle permet peut-être de mieux comprendre le sentiment de révérence qui habite encore le lecteur lorsqu’il lui est donné de contempler un poème inscrit dans ce « temple » qu’est l’espace de la page. This article questions the Renaissance, humanist understanding of the Horatian adage, Ut Pictura Poesis, and endeavors to elucidate the specific ways in which a lyric poem can be considered as an object to be looked at. The early modern poetic production of Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) and of his distant relation George Herbert (1593-1633) testifies to a crisis of the mimetic and ekphrastic powers of poetry. Written in a period following the iconoclast English Reformation and at a time when the humanist faith in the imitative powers of the artist was starting to splinter, their poetry substitutes a new form of visual materiality for the failing art of mimesis. Interestingly, it may help to account for the sense of awe and reverence we still experience when we behold a poem inscribed within the white “temple” of the page.
