EnglishIn Brazil's political and cultural relations abroad. in the period between World War II and early Cold War, the fun ction of lit- erature was thought as both a vehicle for mutual understanding among nations and as a potential carrier of unwanted ideolo- gy. This work draws from the differences between Clarice Lispector's short story “A menor mulher do mundo” and its English translation by Elizabeth Bishop to explore the nuances in the inter - American circula- tion of ideas through fiction. Juxtaposed to state archive material, the case reveals crossroads of literature and its global after- life as a historical source, allowing fo r re- flections on fact and fiction, literature and politics. portuguesNas relacoes politicas e culturais do Brasil com o exterior, no periodo entre a Segunda Guerra Mundial e o inicio da Guer ra Fria, a funcao da literatura foi pensada tanto como veiculo de compreensao mutua entre as nacoes quanto como potencial carregadora de ideologia subversiva.
