Mastery Learning and Contemporary Issues in Education

Issues concerning applications of mastery learning continue to interest educators (Montazemi and Wang, 1995). This paper examined the historical background of mastery learning. In addition, a discussion of computer assisted instruction, cooperative learning, and constructivist learning as these topics relate to mastery learning were addressed. Computer assisted instruction is described as a tool to assist the teacher when using mastery learning. Comparisons between cooperative and mastery learning were discussed and support for research combining both strategies were recommended. Literature describing similarities/differences between constructivism and mastery learning were non-existent. Research using mastery and constructivist learning in combination is an additional recommendation.
