Histórias musicais da Primeira República

Este artigo procura questionar versões e avaliações sobre a história cultural da Primeira República, especialmente sobre o que se entendeu como música brasileira e música popular brasileira no período. Busca demonstrar a insuficiência dos marcos das décadas de 1920 e 1930 - classicamente eleitas como períodos de definição do chamado nacionalismo musical - e os limites das interpretações que resumem a experiência cultural da Primeira República aos modelos importados da Belle Époque e ao gosto pelo exótico. Este artigo sugere, a partir de recentes pesquisas sobre a produção de músicos populares, de intelectuais da música e de agentes da indústria cultural, outras possibilidades de investigação e compreensão da história da música popular no Brasil e, por extensão, da jovem Primeira República. palavras-chave: história da música brasileira; música popular; Primeira República. ABSTRACT: This article intends to challenge some views on the cultural history of Brazil'sFirst Republic, with special attention devoted to the popular music scene. I aim at demonstrating how inadequate the 1920 and 1930 chronological marks are, despite the fact that both are classically seen as defining moments of Brazil's socalled musical nationalist movement. I also intend to unveil the limitations of those interpretations that reduce the cultural experiences of the First Republic to the models imported from the Belle Époque as well as to the experience of the exotic. Base on recent researches about the production of popular musicians, music intellectuals and agents of the culture industry, this article indicates other possible ways of investigating and coming to terms with the history of popular music in Brazil and, as a consequence, in the newly installed First Republic.. keywords history of Brazilian music; popular music; First Republic.
