This report presents an analysis of weighted average salaries for full-time faculty and civil service employees at Illinois public and independent colleges and universities, and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The report includes average salaries for fiscal years 1985, 1990, and 1996-98 and compares salaries with select economic indicators to determine how well salaries have kept pace with inflation. Finally, the report compares average salaries at Illinois institutions with average faculty salaries at comparable institutions in other states as a measure of salary competitiveness. The report suggests that Illinois colleges and universities have been generally successful in increasing salaries at or above the rate of inflation but less than the increase in Illinois per capita income. Additionally, all sectors of Illinois higher education have lost ground relative to salaries at peer institutions in other states, with the salaries at Illinois public universities now 5 percent below median salaries at peer institutions. The data show that for both public and independent institutions nonsalary benefits are less than comparable benefits at peer institutions.
