      This paper traces the history of physics education in America from the time of the revolution to the present. Various reform efforts, innovations, and movements fostering educational change are described. The evolution of high school physics from its inception in this country from no laboratory work for students to laboratory work and from simple laboratory work to a more sophisticated experience in the laboratory is outlined.
