Peter the Great's military significance.

Peter the Great’s territorial acquisitions and modernization reforms transformed Russia and set it on the road to become not only part of Europe but also a great European power. He became the sole ruler of Russia in 1689. His first military adventure was a successful campaign against Turkey in 1695–1696, capturing the strategic fortress of Azov and gaining access to the Black Sea.
