This article reports that last year the U.S. regained its place as the single largest destination of inward direct investment from abroad, attracting $41 billion. But over time it will probably not stay top dog. The world's multinational corporations are increasingly investing in developing countries, looking for markets as well as sources of low-cost labor and production. In 1994 developing countries took $80 billion, a 40% share of the estimated $205 billion world total in cross-border direct investment. China, relegated to second-largest recipient in 1994 from top spot a year before, has seen extraordinary growth in foreign direct investments.
