      Quality of life research was not a priority until the 1980s, when concerns regarding treatment outcomes and the aging American society gained national attention. Inherently a murky concept, quality of life is simultaneously a self-report and an objective measure of general health and well-being, as well as a measure of treatment for specific illness and an overall standard-of-living index.
