Hepatitis B virus (HBV) X protein (HBx) is a multifunctional protein encoded by HBV X gene. It plays a regulatory role in gene transcription, cell signal transduction, cell proliferation and transformation, cell cycle, and cell apoptosis. Currently, HBx is consid-ered to play an important role in the development and progression of HBV - related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The relationship of HBx with oncogene, antioncogene, cell proliferation, cell apoptosis, invasion and metastasis of liver cancer, and liver cancer stem cells is presented, and the role of HBx in the development and progression of HCC is reviewed.
