The article discusses the status of the college entrance examination known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and efforts by the University of California (UC) system to reform its policies concerning the SAT as of 2012. The article examines the historical background of standardized testing as a means of educational assessment in the U.S., the development of the SAT and its role in the application process for universities and colleges, and changes in the use of the SAT by the UC system in the early 21st century, particularly discussed by the UC Academic Senate's Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools (BOARS).
