The article discusses the Superfund soil remediation program being conducted at old mining towns across the U.S., as of August 1993. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the only way to eliminate the health hazards posed by lead in the soil near old mines is to remove the soil. Lead contamination causes brain damage in children. But before taking action two factors should be considered: the level of danger in a particular site and the effectiveness of methods to be used in the remediation.
