The article presents information about Mark Thatcher, 38, founder of Teva Footwear. Thatcher credits his good fortune to a quest for dry feet. As a geology student at Northern Arizona University, Thatcher used to lead weeklong whitewater rafting tours through the Grand Canyon. River guides preferred rubber flip-flops to soggy sneakers, but that left them climbing from raft to rock with their toes clenched like chimpanzees. Thatcher's bright idea: add a strap around the back of the flip-flops to keep them on your feet. This year sales of sports sandals should more than double, to $230 million retail. Thatcher says his Teva Sports Sandals did $40 million wholesale in 1992.
