Doctors may be able to forecast who is most likely to suffer severe nerve damage with diabetes before trouble starts and put you on therapy to prevent neuropathy's grim fallout: chronic pain, numbness, sexual dysfunction, limb amputation, even death. When Duke University researchers checked 187 people with diabetes, they found that those with two particular variations of the Apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene had more widespread, severe nerve damage. The APOE gene plays a role in cholesterol transport and has already been linked to nervous-system diseases. Studies are planned to identify the genes that are linked to specific nerve problems.
