SIGNIFICANCE: Relative to other states, Mississippi experienced little foreign immigration throughout its modern history. Nevertheless, the state has several immigrant communities whose members have faced unique conditions and problems. Vietnamese and Mexican immigrants increased in numbers during the late twentieth century. Immigrants from Mexico and India have dominated in the twenty-first century.
