The article discusses the relationship between the yakuza and the Japanese state during the Interwar period, from 1918 through 1939. The relationship between the Japanese government and criminal violence is discussed. The yakuza's relationship with the Japanese nationalist group the Dai Nihon Kokusuikai (Greater Japan National Essence Association), Japan's Home Ministry, military and police is also discussed. An overview of the role that the Kokusuikai played in the relationship between the political right and left of Japan is provided.
