Victor J. Papanek began his career as a well-trained product designer but left industry for academia in 1954. During his early years, he had been exposed to the finest design instruction available in the United States, at New York’s Cooper Union as well as at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition, he had studied with genuine masters, including Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the modern world’s seminal architects and designers, and French-born Raymond Fernand Loewy, for years a regnant figure in American product design.
