      Dictator of Chile (1973–90). Pinochet seized power over Chile in a military coup in 1973 and headed the military junta until taking over as president. He won recognition in some quarters for employing free market policies in the transformation of Chile’s economy. Despite criticism from the global human-rights community, Pinochet continually referred to himself as a patriot who acted for love of country and hatred of communism.
