      Current research inscribes itself within the investigation on economical and social exchanges and proposes to show the importance that the domestic service had in the occupational milieu of Buenos Aires by the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. An analysis is conducted on the transformations of the city economy, on the development of several sectors of labor activities and the most frequent work alternatives of the city's population. The size and the social composition of the social occupation group are constructed and the current difficulties that exist in studying the domestic service are evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

      El trabajo se inscribe en el estudio de los cambios económicos y sociales y propone demostrar la importancia que tuvo el servicio doméstico en el universo ocupacional de la ciudad de Buenos Aires de fines de siglo XIX y principios del XX. Realiza un recorrido por algunas de las transformaciones de la economía urbana, el desarrollo de los diversos sectores de actividad y las alternativas de trabajo más frecuentes de la población porteña. Asimismo, reconstruye el tamaño y la composición social de este grupo socio-ocupacional y plantea las dificultades que se presentan al momento de estudiar el servicio doméstico.       O trabalho inscreve-se no estudo das mudanças econômico-sociais e propõe demonstrar a importância que teve o trabalho doméstico no universo ocupacional da cidade de Buenos Aires de fins do século XIX e inícios do XX. Realiza-se um percurso por algumas das transformações da economia urbana, o desenvolvimento dos diversos setores da atividade e as alternativas de trabalho mais frequentes da população da cidade. Ao mesmo tempo, reconstrói o tamanho e a composição social deste grupo sócio-ocupacional e expõe as dificuldades que surgem no momento de estudar o serviço doméstico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
