The article focuses on the traditional knowledge of Alaska Native communities and its significance to global warming and environmental change issues. In 1996, the Alaska Native Science Commission and the Institute of Social and Economic Research, University of Alaska in Anchorage, received a grant to fund the Traditional Knowledge and Contaminants project. One of the goals of the project is to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and Western scientific practice to more effectively address environmental concerns in Alaska and globally.
