A Note on "Management Science/Operations Research in Greece" by John C. Papageorgiou.

The article comments on the article "Management Science and Operations Research (MS/OR) in Greece," by J. Papageorgiou, published in the July 1987 issue of this journal. The author in this article discusses some other factors that influence MS/OR in Greece and his slightly different opinion of the condition of MS/OR in Greece today. MS/OR was imported into Greece before the appearance of any specific demand. Because it was not developed in response to demand, it has evolved slowly and has had limited use. Greeks have studied MS/OR mainly in the U.S., Great Britain, France, and other European countries, where they attended courses in MS/OR. On completion of their studies, some of them were employed in universities or businesses before they returned to Greece. Greeks coming back home after completing their high-level studies in MS/OR find a situation with needs that are not at all similar to those they have studied and that are not matched to what they can offer. This leads many times to disappointment, lack of job mobility, and professional insecurity. The author in this article stresses that Greeks who study MS/OR abroad must adapt to the Greek situation, and this must be done with great care and attention in order to maintain high professional and scientific standards.
