In this article the authors examine reasons why Taiwanese children perform better than their American counterparts on international mathematics tests, specifically the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) exam. They reasons they cite for the achievement differences are based on research evidence and include cultural differences in the attitudes of Taiwanese and American mothers towards mathematics education and performance, the emphasis of Taiwanese mathematics curriculum on computational skill in comparison to creative math skills in the U.S., and the role of mathematics curriculum in educational reform policies in each country.
