      In this basic text the author proposes to identify and define the problems and tendencies of education in prison, both at regional and global levels; thus, reference will be made to international cooperation, teachers, warders, civil society associations, professional training as well as religion, illegal immigration and the often forgotten challenge of evaluation. At the same time, we will see how certain problems like 'penitentiarism' and overpopulation influence the organisation of educational activities as well as everyday fife in prison. One of the main remarks highlights the fact that, beyond conventional ideas, the differences spotted are explained not only by the amount of material and financial resources: it's mainly about building democratic institutions as well a legal system that supports them.
