      The article recalls the violence in China during the Great Leap Forward from 1958 to 1962. It notes that about 45 million Chinese died during the period and the deaths are said to be regarded as a quixotic campaign to establish a communist society that resulted into grain shortages. Results of a study that author Frank Dikötter published in his book "Mao's Great Famine" show that at least 2.5 million of the deaths have been caused by torture or summary killing. The role of party violence in the rise of the death toll is explored in the book.
